What after the UNFCCC #COP25 disaster?

“I am disappointed with the results of #COP25. The international community lost an important opportunity to show increased ambition on mitigation, adaptation & finance to tackle the climate crisis. But we must not give up, and I will not give up.”

Dear Mr. Guterres,

We share your disappointment on the #COP25 fiasco.

Some of us, however, could see this coming as this Open Letter to you 5 months back might suggest. It is time to leave behind the undemocratic and unwieldy United Nations bullied by rogue and recalcitrant nation-states and move on towards a direct representation of people and communities through a proposed GAIA as Global Assembly of Indigenous and Autonomous communities in forests, villages, and cities.

The utter failure of #COP25 hardly comes as a surprise as I have been writing about for years now. To recap, here is it in a 5-pointer nutshell.

1. Local is the Future. We need a new model of Global Governance to create a global mandate for the LACE model for Localised Abundance and Circular Economies.

2. For this, I propose GAIA – Earth Parliament as the Global Assembly of Indigenous and Autonomous communities in forests, villages, and cities. People and communities will now find a direct representation in the new global body with a new constitution based on the LACE model and the consensus on United Nations Declaration for Rights of Indigenous Peoples passed nearly unanimously in 2007.

3. This will replace the current system of nation-states and the United Nations which even after 75 years is a most undemocratic setup held ransom by the Big Bully – the rogue entity called the United States. As the headline suggests, COP25 failure once again reinforces this fact.

4. Equally important this new arrangement of Localised Governance in every forest, village and city communities around the world will also cut out the “bulge in the middle” by disintermediating the nation-states and their provinces.

5. In the new Indigenous World Order, every community will fro Day 1, aim for Zero Carbon Emissions and transition to be a Carbon Sink within next 3-5 years with a well-conceived reward and penalties mechanism in place to expedite this process and create a healthy competition and cooperation as necessary.

As a key member of several international groups on climate and ecological activism – “Degrowth Revolution” moderated as a social media group by Environment lawyer Kirk Hall, Extinction Rebellion, Greta Thunberg’s Global Strike for Climate #FFF and recently invited by Jamie Margolin ‘s Zero Hour besides active participation at several national and international forums including notably at Jessica Seddon ‘s World Resources Institute, I shall once again appeal to you to either shake things up at UN and lead it out of the murky shadows of pseudo and slimeball colonialism or to declare it null and void and join us at GAIA as a mentor, philosopher, and guide.

Sincerely Yours,

Open Letter to Mr. Antonio Guterres Secretary-General to the United Nations on Climate Action

Dear Mr. Guterres,
Salute your relentless efforts to awaken the sleeping nation-states controlled by adults with old dirty habits and vested interests. Children and youth around the world are immensely grateful to you for your support and solidarity with us in our struggles against the gross violations of our rights to inter-generational justice and to all the more than 98% of marginalized oppressed and subjugated sections of human society. What a shame that a tiny minority sunk in hubris and in utter disregard to our safety and survival wants to take down all of us in one fell swoop.
Sensing the drift of how the acceleration and intensity of global climate breakdown far surpass the current governance structures of “sovereign” nation-states and United Nations, we, the children and youth are already preparing to take the matter in our hands.
1. As push comes to shove, we will be announcing the formal launch of GAIA – The Earth Parliament as a collective of tens of thousands of self-sustainable city and village republics around the world. This will be announced on the day of the next big Global Climate Strike on Friday 20th September, 3 days before the UN Climate Action Summit on Monday, September 23, 2019.
2. To coordinate a smooth transition to fill up the gaps that will be created by shutdown of large scale manufacturing, grids and pipelines of electricity, gas, water and communication channels (except for the bare necessities), we are in process of setting up a Global Coordination Centre for Climate Action (Link in comments and below) that will also be announced on the same date.

3. In accordance, we shall have the discretion as provided by the United Nations Declaration for Rights of Indigenous People signed in 2007 by all the nation-states (with few abstentions) to continue to support the nation-states in our geography or to set up our independent systems and structures in every city and village republic or in regional clusters.
Looking up to you for your personal efforts and tremendous contributions, we shall invite you as a Mentor friend philosopher and guide for our new initiative as we see no hope of shaking up the gargantuan UN bureaucracy and the vice-grip of the errant and rogue nation-states completely oblivious to the survival and well-being of the people they claim to represent.
I have been working as a climate and ecological activist for two decades and wrote this article in 2007 on why we needed to urgently align economic development goals to a healthy environment. (Ref 1) and a recent letter to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on the urgent need to decommission polluting industries and habitats.(Ref 2)
